Don't let New Mexico be the next Arizona

Right wing extremists have a proposal. They want to strip drivers' licenses from foreign nationals. For them, restricting driver's licenses is the first step in creating an anti-immigrant political machine in New Mexico, just like they did in Arizona.

Thankfully, the New Mexico State Legislature already rejected this proposal once this year. Instead, lawmakers who support a common sense approach tried passing a compromise bill that ensured that only New Mexico residents can get licenses.

But Governor Martinez and Republicans in Santa Fe blocked this common sense approach.

Send a message now. Tell New Mexico lawmakers to reject the Governor's campaign to turn New Mexico into the next Arizona and to reject her drivers' license bill.

I believe that the compromise bill on drivers' licences that passed the Senate earlier this year was the right approach. It makes common sense to make sure that only those who can prove New Mexico residency for six months can be issued drivers' licenses.

A driver's license is not a privilege or a right, it is a legal obligation. It also provides documentation for all law enforcement agencies to access, making our communities safer.

Licensed drivers cooperate more with police, insured cars lower premiums for all of us, and license and registration fees add millions of dollars in state revenues.

Our legislature should focus on our state's top priority, job creation. It should not spend precious time debating wedge issues and pet projects of the Governor and her right wing backers.

Please reject the Governor's Arizona-style politics. New Mexico is better than that.
